Springfield To Play Buddy Holly

Australian Singer - songwriter, Rick Springfield has been signed up to play Buddy Holly in an American full-length feature movie.

The life of the rock 'n' roll legend, Buddy Holly, is to be filmed by top Hollywood producer, Bill Sargent.

Negotiations were concluded last week in Hollywood for the movie, "The Buddy Holly Story", between Sargent, his Entertainment 4 Productions and Springfield's managers Steve Binder and Robie Porter.

"The Buddy Holly Story" is likely to go into production early next year.

Holly died more than 10 years ago in a plane crash along with the other idols of the late '50s - The Big Bopper and Richie Valens.

He died at the height of his popularity after such smash hits as "Rave On', "Peggy Sue", and "It Doesn't Matter Any More" and "Heartbeat".

Over the past two years the Buddy Holly legend has grown into cult proportions. Don McLean dedicated the song, "American Pie", to Buddy Holly and the Ringo Starr-David Essex movie, "That'll Be The Day", owes much to Holly.

Springfield as Holly will have to lose his good looks to be transformed into the adenoidal bespectacled cow-licked '50s idol.

Springfield has recently changed his stage image and at his debut in Maxs', Kansas City, New York, he appeared on stage in skins, fur and chamois, giving away his previous jeans and folksy look.

Springfield's current single, "American Girl", is climbing the US top 100 singles charts.
