"Let Me In"

Rick Springfield Returns With New Song 'Let Me In' From Upcoming Album 'Rocket Science': Exclusive Song Premiere

Rick Springfield calls his upcoming disc, Rocket Science, "probably the most positive album I've ever written." And it's not just because he expects big sales or lots of attention for it.

"I was just wanting to change my attitude," Springfield tells Billboard. "Pissing and moaning about something and dooms-daying is not gonna help anything. I've always been a big one to do that, pissing and moaning. So I wanted to have some solutions for once rather than just moaning. I've been having a better mindset lately and focused on different things. I'm always fighting the depression -- that's taught for me -- but the way I deal with that mainly is just to write, and feeling that I'm doing something creative really helps my mood."

That said, "Let Me In" -- the first song Springfield wrote for Rocket Science, which comes out Feb. 19 -- was drawn from darker circumstances in his life. "I was having issues with my primary relationship, and it came out of that," explains Springfield, who's been married to wife Barbara since 1984. "The best songs come from a moment of truth for me, and that was an issue I was having a really tough time with, so it came from that. I'm very guilty of creating conflict to get the emotions stirred up and be able to write. There's deeper stuff in conflict; That's the only time you stop and think is when things aren't going well. When things are going well you're kind of full steam ahead, and I don't really write much when I'm happy."

Billboard is exclusively premiering "Let Me In" below, as well as Springfield performing an acoustic version of the track and a behind-the-scenes video about the song.

Fans will also notice a distinct country flavor to Rocket Science, Springfield's 18th studio album overall. It's evident in many of the song structures and melodies, as well as instrumentation that crops up throughout the album. "It's not a country album; It's a pop album, but it does have country influences that I love and have always loved," says Springfield, who co-produced Rocket Science with longtime cohort and current Elton John bassist Matt Bissonette. "I've always loved the fiddle and the lap steel, the pedal steel, I love all the banjo picking with guitars. I did write a couple songs with some country guys (including Rascal Flatts' Jay DeMarcus on the track 'Down'), but that's where pop has gone. So we thought we'd just do an album with those influences present." And Springfield also brought in Justin Niebank (Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Hunter Hayes, Kid Rock) to handle the mix. "They know how to put it in so the guitars are still the dominant instrument, 'cause I write everything on guitar pretty much," he explains.

Springfield is spending some time in his native Australia before Rocket Science's release, and the year's touring gets underway Feb. 12-13 at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville. Springfield recently wrapped a new independent film, Traces, after appearing in HBO's True Detective last year, and he's working on ideas for TV series as well.
The singer-songwriter-actor-author is also writing a sequel to his philosophical novel Magnificent Vibration, though he's keeping the idea of adapting that for film at arm's length right now. "It'd be a very expensive film," Springfield notes. "It's very wide-ranging. I think maybe when I finish the sequel, the two of the together might make an interesting movie. There's a lot of stuff in it that I'm interested in and I'm sure a lot of people are -- certainly the planet and God and what the fuck is it all about is a pretty big question."

Badlands Pawn concert review

Side Stage Magazine
January 7, 2016
Badlands Pawn, Gold and Rock n’ Roll
Sioux Falls, SD
Written By: Elsa Martinez

His career spans decades in music, movies, TV, and as an author.  Yet his music and his fans are still here and still amazing! Selling over 15 million albums, touring the world and being on film, everyone knows his best by his megahit “Jessie’s Girl”.

His full band show was the first showcased at the Badlands venue in Sioux Falls, SD for their “Thursday Night Live” event.  This amazing new venue is by far one of the best places I have seen a show. It is big enough to bring in big names in music, but small enough to make it an intimate experience with the performers.  Before the show, Rick (Springfield) requested that the front barriers be removed so the fans could stand at the stage, which made it even more intimate.

With a new album ready to drop on February 19, 2016, his tour is going through March 19th, with a mixture of full band (plugged) shows and “stripped down” (acoustic) shows.  At 66 years old, “two-thirds evil,” as he told the crowd, he is still jumping around on stage and running out into the crowd, as he did during “Human Touch” and his signature rose-thrashing on his guitar, in which he has jokingly called himself the “Morticia Adams of rock and roll”.

If the atmosphere was not filled with screams when he took the stage, they surely did fill the room when he took his jacket off to reveal his not-so-60’s ripped biceps.

Although most of the crowd was undoubtedly there to see him perform “Jessie’s Girl”, they all found themselves singing along to the other songs just as loudly.  He has proven time and time again that he is not just a heartthrob, but he can also bring a high-energy set with his hits like “Love is Alright” and “Don’t Talk to Strangers”, but with incredible guitar-shredding songs like “Wipeout” and “Pipeline” by The Ventures.

He closed the show with a video teaser of clips from various movies and shows that had stars singing “Jessie’s Girl”, like Hot tub Time Machine, and two of his other hits “I’ll Make You Happy” and “Kristina”, which incidentally was his opening song back in his 80’s heydays.  All in all, seeing him live, you would not even think that he was in his 60’s and still churning out hits just like he has been since the 70’s, but his charisma and talent is clear and I look forward to hearing his new release next month.

Yesterday, December 9, USA Today hosted the world premiere of the first song from the album, 'Light This Party Up'. The song can be enjoyed here:

With 25 million records sold, Rick Springfield has withstood the test of time far better than most critics would ever have imagined, performing nearly 100 concerts around the world every year.  He has written and performed some of the best-crafted power pop anthems of the past 40 years, including 17 U.S. top 40 hits; among them, 'Don't Talk to Strangers', 'An Affair of the Heart', 'I've Done Everything for You', 'Love Somebody', and 'Human Touch', as well as the 1981 Grammy' Best Male Rock Vocal winning No. 1 single, 'Jessie's Girl'. Springfield has even more to say on his latest release, Rocket Science.

The new album features classic Springfield compositions like the crowd pumping 'Light This Party Up', the sensitive ballad 'Let Me In', the anthemic 'All Hands On Deck,' and the blues infused rocker 'Miss Mayhem', on which he collaborated with indie artist Tad Kubler of the band The Hold Steady. Rick also wrote 'Down' 'in the middle of an ice storm on a stranded tour bus'with Rascal Flatts' Jay DeMarcus.

Springfield says 'Rocket Science is my 18th studio album. It swears a bit and doesn't respect authority, but it does look after its invalid mother. It has some of the country elements I love, but as much as I understand we should all be sucking up to Nashville, it's still a wide ranging pop/rock record. I hope you dig it!'

Frontiers Music Srl President Serafino Perugino states 'Rocket Science is the fourth album that Frontiers is releasing with Rick Springfield, the first one that also involves the US territory. It's always been a pleasure to be at Rick's service, he's a true musical legend and his albums are always top notch. Rocket Science is no exception, and once again this will be a true delight for all his fans, myself included!'

Rocket Science is a pop/country blend fused with Springfield's signature songwriting and performance style, and features much of Springfield's touring band joined by some guest players. The album was mixed by veteran Justin Niebank, who gave the project it's tight feel. Other featured players include iconic guitarist and longtime Springfield collaborator Tim Pierce, plus songwriting partner and album co-producer, Elton John bass player Matt Bissonette.

In addition to collaborating and starring in the Dave Grohl documentary 'Sound City' and penning two New York Times best selling books, Springfield played opposite Academy Award' winner Meryl Streep in Jonathan Demme's 'Ricki & The Flash', plus a multi episode arc in the HBO series 'True Detective'. He also appears opposite Orange Is The New Black's Pablo Schreiber and actress Sosie Bacon in the forthcoming film, 'Traces'.

Pre-orders for Rocket Science are available now on Apple Music/iTunes and Amazon.com. Those who pre-order the MP3 version of 'Rocket Science'' will instantly receive the first single, 'Light This Party Up', with additional tracks made available in the forthcoming weeks prior to release. As an added feature, digital versions of the album will feature a bonus track, 'Beautiful Inside'.

Rick Springfield's Massive 'Star Wars' Toy Collection

Considering that he's been a rock icon for more than 30 years, it's hard to imagine that there are too many sides to Rick Springfield that we haven't seen yet. And yet, the "Jessie's Girl" singer — who's been moonlighting as an actor since the Seventies, and recently stepped up his onscreen game with roles in True Detective and Ricki and the Flash — is still full of surprises, even at 66. One didn't-see-this one-coming shock in particular: Springfield owns one of the world’s biggest collections of Star Wars action figures.

That's not a joke.

On the contrary, this could hardly be more serious, as we saw for ourselves when the musician invited Rolling Stone into his Malibu home for an exclusive look at his most prized possessions. "I've always been a toy freak," he admits, reflecting on how the first installment of George Lucas' space opera came out when he was at the perfect age to appreciate the merchandise. That was the start of a life-long passion, and his collection now includes everything from common Luke Skywalker editions to Turkish bootlegs and a "Blue Stars" model so rare that it's worth the down payment on a small house.

Needless to say, we were blown away — but to find out just how impressive it is to the world of hardcore "toy freaks," we went to Sotheby's and spoke to the dedicated super fans behind the auction house's massive Star Wars sale, Return of the NIGO. It turns out that they were genuinely awed by what Springfield has been hiding in his closet, where they're perfectly preserved inside plastic cases. "They're cheesy figures!" Springfield laughs. "They're badly painted, badly made … the only cool thing is the great artwork."

So just how hyped is Springfield for this month's release of The Force Awakens? "I actually like the toys more than I like the movies."
