The Vermont State Fair show of 9/8 was well worth the 2-1/2 hour drive from the Massachusetts border. Despite a forecast of a few thunderstorms for the day in Rutland, VT? We drove up anyway silently singing "rain, rain, go away...". It must have worked. Although the clouds lingered, the sun occasionally poked through. We had time to see the fair exhibits, with time to spare towait in line for the general admission seating that was in front of the stage. Well worth the waitto meet a new friend. She'd waited 30 years to see Rick live for the first time. Her reaction to his coming on stage was priceless. C'mon, you must remember the awe of your first time! We made sure she was in front of us right at the stage so she could enjoy an awesome first concert. The rose explosions were an unexpected treat for her, as well as having a guitar pick tossed her way.

After one of the best introductions by a radio personality, MIX 98.1 WJJR's Nanci Gordon, Rick the stage giving 110%. He was ON. Despite the cool weather. Wearing black striped suit type pants, what appeared to be matching shirt with the sleeves off, and a black vest, the one with the chains printed on them, suspenders dangling in back, he opened with "Who Killed Rock and Roll." The audience was stoked from this get go and it just romped forward from there.

Highlights besides the songs were his chattiness over a Mission Magic DVD someone brought, which he graciously signed and gave an example of his Australian accent during that time period. Playing with a blow up hammer a young boy named Tyler had won and was gleefully playing air guitar on in the audience. Rick borrowed it to "hammer" on Rodger. Rodger did get Rick back by snatching it and hitting Rick on the head. Rick also graciously signed the hammer for the boy, Tyler. Comments by Rick ranged to Vermont not having manyhouses, it's a commune, right? That if it snowed, he was bailing. That it was "frickin' cold!"Someone gave him a homemade official looking AARP card which stood for "Also Aging Rock Stars"(forgive me if I got that wrong!) He flipped it back at them telling them to, um, well, stuff it. (Yes, I'm editing!). He mentioned he'd recently had a birthday and had the crowd sing to him. As well as mentioning Hard to Hold, did we think it, and then his butt should have won and Oscar.

During DTTS, he had warned Bill, the security dude in the cool hat he was going to get him. Bill had discretely moved far enough away to still be close, but out of reach. Sly dude! So Rick did go along the stage and had the concert virgin in front of me sing, as well as a guy, and several others. Of course he found the kids in the audience, going back to Tyler with the blow up hammer, as well as bring little 4 year old Nathan on stage to dance and sing. Both boys did a terrific job. After Nathan, Rick made mention of wanting more kids and asked if there were any volunteers. You know there was a roar from the crowd.

After non stop fun, it was over all too soon with the strains of Jessie's Girl. There was a great encore

Not having been to a concert in two years, this set list was welcome to this writer and one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I've only just realized there was not a medley done, which liked when I heard it, but I liked the way the energy from this set list flowed. It was great to be out of doors even if it was standing on a harness racing track with stage in front, grand stand behind. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Rick Springfield Performs at Hot August Nights

This concert was part of Lewiston's 24th annual "Hot August Nights" car show. Rick and some of the boys were spotted earlier in the day checking out the cars at the "Show and Shine" downtown. The concert was at Pioneer Park just up the road. It was an outdoor venue with festival style seating (standing room only infront of stage and lawnchairs behind). Unfortunately this August night was not hot, but the weather held up as it was drizzling at one point. Three local bands opened up for Rick and played classic rock, blues and country. While I'm sure they were great musicians, everyone was anxious to get on with the main act.

By the time Rick started playing, there was a sea of people there. A chainlink fence separated those standing in the front row (like moi) from the stage. Buzz tried to get us closer to the stage by moving the chainlink fence forward, but this idea turned into a disaster and spurred lots of pushing and shoving. He and the security staff realized it wasn't going to work so the fence was put back to its original position. I was thankful because I went from being in front row to third row and then back to front row.

Rick opened with Who Killed Rock and Roll and the party was on! He was in a great mood!!! Very energetic, talkative and cheeky, of course (just the way we like him). He was wearing a white t-shirt, black jacket, black pants and black plain (minus the glitter) Converse high tops. He lost the jacket after the first few songs. Like a true kid at heart, Rick busted out a toy gun that shot darts with suction cups. He explained that he went to Wal Mart for the FIRST TIME today and bought that gun for 7 bucks!!! He couldn't believe how cheap it was; I guess that's because discount stores do not exist in Malibu. What's even funnier is the image of Rick running straight to the toy aisle his first time in Wal Mart (ha, ha). This man's boyish charm is just too darn cute!

Rick asked if anyone knew it was just his birthday. The crowd yelled yes, even though I'm sure a lot of them didn't. Then he asked if we knew how old he was. People started yelling random ages including 61 and he told us all to "shut up". He then led us in singing Happy Birthday, pointing to himself with both thumbs and belting out "Happy Birthday to ME". Rick beamed, again like a true kid at heart

I had made a sign for this concert that started out boring and then went to risque in 2.5 seconds. It originally said "I want a ride in your hotrod"....considering this concert was at a car show. Then I thought that wasn't interesting enough so I impulsively crossed out the "in" and changed it to "on". I know, bad huh? But we all know Rick's sense of humour is a little warped like that. I decided to hold up the sign during "I Get Excited". Well nothing gets by this guy. Rick smiles then announces to the crowd, "This sign says I want a ride "in", no "ON" your hotrod" and proceeds to talk about his new baby. On an interesting side note, my husband chose to stand two rows behind me at this show. He claims it's because he wanted to be "nice" and let my Rick friends stand infront of him, but I am thinking he just didn't want to be seen with me (I can't say I blame him....lol).

I don't really know what made Rick think about aliens, but he asked if we believed in them. Random answers were hollered back at him. He replied "Dumb shits.....if they come down and butt probe me then I will believe it!" Bad Ricky.....doesn't he know they give you something to make you forget the whole experience (geesh). At one point Matt had to go pee so Rick started demonstrating his awesome guitar playing skills. Wow, that guy can sure play a mean guitar! His passion is so intense.....you can't help but wish you were THAT guitar.

For DTTS, he picked on a security guard, Bill and then jumped on top of the chain link fence and had a couple of fans test their chops. While he was up there, he picked two kids (about 12) to come up on stage with him (Hayley and Morgan). When he found out Hayley's name he confessed that he loved Hayley Mills when he was a teenager and used to kiss her picture every night. In fact, he thinks he may still have that picture somewhere, lip marks and all. Rick asked if anyone had a picture of him they kissed everynight, which definitely elicted some screams. The band started playing some funky music and Rick told the kids "let's dance" and they all started bopping up and down. He said "in the 80's we used to call that "the pogo"". Hayley told him that her Mom loves him. His response "If your mom's as cute as you are, we might go out drinking tonight". He asked Hayley if she herself had a lot of boyfriends and she shook her head no. Rick couldn't let it go at that and said "you don't like boys yet right" to which she motioned so-so with her hand. She had such a serious look on her face, he broke out laughing and told her mom to enjoy her now because in about 4 years it's all going to explode. Morgan got to sing first and he did a great job (Rick rubbed this in to the security guard and then predicted Morgan was going to get lucky tonight). Then it was Hayley's turn. Before they got started Rick asked "If I give you a dime, will you call me in 10 years". She gave him this funny sideways look and he totally lost it!!! He hoped somebody got her look on camera as it was classic. I got it on video (ssssshh, don't tell) but haven't yet figured out how to download it on youtube. Hayley also sang really well. They got hugs and kisses and then Rick instructed them to, "get the hell off my stage".

Rick was really sweaty at this point. He asked the crowd, "Is anyone wet???.....cause I am!" (tease). He told us not to look while he got changed but of course our eyes (and cameras) were fixated on him. Now he was in his black sleeveless "The Bastards" shirt. He attempted to wade into the crowd for Human Touch but didn't get very far. "You guys are packed tight!" He talked about and played some recognizable guitar rifts before going into Jessie's Girl.

For the encore, Rick came out wearing his felty black "cowboy themed" vest, no shirt and burgundy framed glasses. A shirtless encore!!!!.....well kinda. He did Wild Thing and Kristina and sadly the concert came to an end. This was one of the best shows I've been to in a long time and I'm glad to see Lewiston embraced both Rick and his music.

The view from the 5th row is amazing!! So, while we were waiting for Rick and the band to make their appearance on stage, the venue started playing Bruce Springsteen. We thought they would only play one song, as a joke, well, it turned out they played almost an entire collection of songs. We did not think this was very funny and we wondered what Rick was thinking.

Finally, Rick and the guys came on and opened with Mr. PC. My sister and I made Rick a happy birthday sign, held it up for him to see and we were happy to see the look on his face when he saw it. The audience sang happy birthday to him, which he requested. Rick said that he couldn't see the audience so he grabbed his guitar and came out into the crowd to play the beginning of Crossroads. Rick didn't think that there were any kids in the audience for DTTS but he saw a little boy that he brought up on stage. Rick couldn't hear the boy's name so he asked him a second time and the boy yelled "Mason." Rick also couldn't hear when Mason told him his age so Mason yelled that also, it was very cute and funny. My sister and I also brought him roses so when he came into the crowd for DTTS, he took them from my hand and threw them up on stage. I was very happy to see them being used when he went back on stage.

During the show, someone threw a pair of shorts on stage that George put on. When he turned around we saw that they had a big butt sticking out. George started dancing around and shaking his butt and Rick started laughing so hard when he saw him. Rick came into the audience for a little Human Touch and the seats were so bad that he lost his balance twice, one time he fell on my sister. He walked to the row behind us and people were holding him up and he wanted to know where his security was to help him. Rick left the stage for a few minutes and the venue started playing Bruce Springsteen again. We were very happy to see Rick come out again to perform Wild Thing and Kristina. It was a great way to end Rick's concert run in Ohio.

This was a typical casino show, where the high rollers had the better seats, and the hard core fans were further back (well, except for those few people who never feel the need to actually sit in their seats and are always looking for something better). The opening music seemed different. Not sure when that change took place.

So Rick comes out and the majority of the people stayed seated. He opened with Who Killed Rock n Roll. After about 5 songs, Rick said he had just had a birthday and had everyone sing Happy Birthday to him. He asked how many people were wondering “who the f*@K is this guy, that’s not Noah Drake!”. Then he says “yes it is”. There was no stage rush, so there was quite a gap between the front row and the stage, so people would walk along that path when they were coming in and out, and Rick makes the comment “There’s a lot of F*ing people walking around.” He told them he was going to start flicking guitar picks at the people that walked in front, and he did. Every time someone would walk in front of him, he’d flick a pick at them, and he’d try really hard to hit them.

He sang IGE, and he stopped after the first verse and did some heavy breathing, and he made the comment “I’m not even breathing hard yet.” He ended up singing the first verse of IGE twice, instead of the 2^nd verse. He kind of caught himself, and knew it was wrong, but for some reason went ahead with it. After Alyson, there were still a lot of people walking around in front and he said “when did this become a f*ing highway”. Right before “I’ll Miss that Someday” he said “this is about our Fathers”.

Someone apparently brought him some white wine and he said “I’m a vampire, I don’t drink white wine. On the road, only red.”

People were still sitting down and walking around in the front and he said “how many how Rollers do we have here?”

At the beginning of Crossroads, he went off stage, and stood in one of the chairs in the front row, and as soon as he did that a lot of people stood up and a lot of people came from their seats and tried to get close to him. So when he went back on stage to play the song, a lot of people had rushed to the stage, so there was no more gap for people to walk through and a lot of people stayed standing.

During DTTS, he tried to get the security guard to sing, and he didn’t want to, so he told him “don’t make me get nasty. Girls like guys that sing, it’s not hard to figure out. You’re not getting out of here without singing, its just the way things go.” He told the guy he needed to loosen up, and played around with that for a bit. He had some more people sing, and instead of singing, one girl shouted in the mic “I saw you in the 8^th grade”. And Rick replied back “you were in 8^th grade, or I was in the 8^th grade?” Then he wanted to find someone that didn’t really know he was to get them to sing, so he found someone and asked what their name was, and after they told him, he had to ask them again, and he said “sorry, I thought you said Hitler (her name was April”). After the song he made the comment “you guys are really winding up – I’m very happy!”

Before Love Somebody, he did he normal thing asking how many people saw the movie – Hard to Watch….Hard to Swallow…Hard to Hold. How many people thought it was a great movie? How many people thought it should have won an Oscar? How many people thought his ass should have won an Oscar? He then asked how many people had seen Californication last season. He said it was a very rude show he was still showing off his butt, but he couldn’t help it. Then he said the next song had been in both Californication and Hard to Hold. During that song, a fan had come on stage and gotten under Matt’s guitar. Then when the song was done, she had a sharpie and she got Rick to sign her lower back. But something got messed up with Matt’s bass, and Rick said “see what happens when fans get on stage?” By that time there was a really big crowd against the stage and Rick says “Thank God we got rid of all those High Rollers”. (I think they were mostly still there, he just couldn’t see them any more). He then said he hated it when people got free tickets for spending money.

He went out into the crowd for Human Touch. Only went out about 8 or 9 rows. When he got back, his intro to Jessie’s Girl was “There was this girl, and there was this guy, and he was a good looking bastard and she wouldn’t even look at me twice. So I wrote a song about her. You might have heard it.

He ended the show with Fire and Kristina (shirtless, with glasses). He had to work for it, but he eventually got the crowd the way he liked it.

Rick Springfield Performs at The Benton Franklin Fair

The Benton Franklin Fair in Kennewick, WA greeted us with temperatures in the mid 90’s, fair food and farm animals, but most importantly, with an intimate outdoor concert setting. The reserved seats were sectioned-off folding chairs, but beyond that area, there were bleachers and a lawn area where any fair-goer could hang out and enjoy the show.
Local radio DJs came out to introduce Rick, and got the crowd going a bit by throwing T-shirts into the crowd, and by getting the crowd to sing “Happy Birthday” song to Rick, with George N. accompanying on guitar.
Rick came out after the intro music and jumped right into “Mr. PC” sporting shades and a sleeveless black shirt. The shades weren’t on for very long thank goodness! He interacted a lot with George B. and it looked like everybody else on stage was having a good time too. Rick encouraged another round of “Happy Birthday” using big gestures, just in case we weren’t clear on who the birthday boy was.
Shirt-changing time! Rick took his time changing from one sleeveless black shirt to another, and in the process I saw a ton of cameras (including mine) go up. He thanked us afterward for respecting his wishes for no photos, uh-huh right!
“Don’t Talk To Strangers” moments started out with “Officer Ed” up front, who sang loud and proud. Rick joked that anyone that went to the show that gets pulled over by Officer Ed in the next week gets out of their speeding ticket *woohoo*. Officer Ed also saved our Rick from a stage stair stumble, so kudos to Ed! Two cute little girls in the front were brought up on stage by Rick for their DTTS moment. Rick broke out in dance with them first, which was hilarious to watch.
I was wondering if the crowd would ever stay standing, as they seemed to go up and down (this is rock n’ roll, people, STAND UP). If DTTS didn’t do it, “Human Touch” got everybody on their feet. He covered quite a bit of territory and the crowd was thrilled. Rick ended the show with an Encore of Wild Thing and Kristina ... and finished up with a water spray like he used to do at his shows in the 80's. It was fun to see that again!
It was a beautiful night (with a lovely orange moon that Rick commented on), and an energetic show, a great way to bring summer to a close!

Rick Springfield Shows Tacoma How To Rock!

Rick has played enough shows at the Emerald Queen Casino over the years that he joked at the beginning of the show that they were becoming the “resident band”. That would be OK by all of us here in the Northwest! Thankfully, pictures were allowed at this show, which has not always been the case at EQC. Security was also very pleasant to talk to and they were not being over-vigilant, again, which has not always been so. If you have stopped coming to EQC shows because of either problem, I recommend you give them another try next time Rick comes back, because with the house appearing to be packed, I’m sure he will.

The intro music was cranked up so loud that you could feel it (LOVE that), and then Rick appeared, wearing a black jacket over a white T-shirt, but the jacket didn’t stay on long, to crowd delight. The crowd was on its feet from start to finish, as Rick had tons of energy to share with us. Rick had a lot of interaction with George B., and it was good to see both he and Matt B. share the main microphone with Rick at one point. (Side note: Matt’s current hat and shades look on-stage is very cool.)

At one point Rick bumped his lip with the microphone, mentioned it, and then pointed to his lip. Many screaming voices volunteered to kiss and make it better. He also mentioned that his Birthday was coming up and had everyone sing him Happy Birthday!

DTTS moments included the security guard nearest to the stage, who talked the lyrics at first, and when Rick asked how old he was, Rick commented that he had a son about his age. I’m pretty convinced that the seasoned security guards there know by now what happens when you get the front guard spot, so I bet they send the unknowing newbies up there to be picked on. Just a thought J. Rick surfed the crowd for a couple of rows, finding people in and out of tune along the way.

For “Human Touch” he gave the first few rows on both sides some love as much as possible, and even though he disappeared down off chairs a couple of times, for the most part the crowd seemed to take good care of him.

For the encore, Rick came out in his glasses and a sleeveless black shirt, which I must say is a great look for him. The crowd was on its feet for the whole show, from what I could tell, so the energy Rick gave he got right back, If you’ve been to one of those shows, you know that it feels pretty electric. I’m looking forward to having the “resident band” back at the Emerald Queen sooner rather than later!

Rick Springfield Rocked the NW Washington Fair

The Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden was the first of three Western Washington shows for Rick last week. The opener for Rick was mutton busting, with little kids riding sheep and wagon races around the track. Matty and George N. Were very intent on watching the races I wish I would have gotten a picture of them. Then in preparation for Rick they hooked a tractor to the stage and pulled it closer to the bandstands!

The weather for this outdoor show started out pleasantly in the 70's but quickly got cooler when the sun went down.

Rick appeared on stage with sunglasses, grey t-shirt, black jacket & slacks. He came out on stage and said this was the first time that horses had opened for him and that the stage was put in place by a tractor! Rick opened with "Fire" which I have never know him to open with, perhaps to mix it up for the other shows. Then he launched into Mr PC. which is his usual opener. He got off a few good guitar tosses & catches.

Early in the show Rick mentioned it was his birthday month and asked if anyone knew how old he was when we shouted 61 he said "shut up!" lol He thought we should sing him Happy Birthday .... so he got the audience to sing him Happy Birthday and he was please with how well it was sung!

When preparing the audience to sing the Yeah, Yeah's for Venus in Overdrive ..... started talking about Close Encounters .... had everyone sing the notes to call the aliens. He asked if this was and area visited by aliens and since it was outdoors he tried to peak out an look for the aliens .... he didn't find any and asked who believed ... some cheers from the audience and he laughed at them. He said he would believe in them when one comes down and probes him! lol

The audience really got into the concert when Rick started coming into the audience. Rick got several people in the audience to sing Don't talk to stranger before bringing on stage a cute little girl named Mackenzie. Rick got her to dance with him and when asked where she learned to dance like that she said "I took ballet" Rick melted when Rick asked her if she would sing for him she said "if you help me!" To which Rick said she might be going home with him because she was too cute! She did sing without much help from Rick.

The crowd went crazy when Rick came out for Human Touch .... finally the whole venue was standing and stayed that way for the rest of the concert....... Love Somebody, Human Touch .... and finally Jessie's Girl to close the show.

Rick came back out and sang Wild Thing and Kristina.

I think this is pretty much the set list not sure of the order.
