New TV Role for Rick Springfield?

Reported on: EW.com Entertainment Weekly

Exclusive: Rick Springfield joins 'Californication'

Apr 28, 2009, 10:28 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Man, the Coreys are going to be pissed they didn't get this.

Actor-slash-"Jessie's Girl" crooner Rick Springfield has signed on to play himself in four episodes of Californication, sources confirm to me exclusively.

As I tweeted earlier this month, producers of the Showtime dramedy put out a casting call looking for "an actor who experienced huge fame in the 80's to play themselves as a now down-on his-luck-ex-celebrity waiting tables to get by."

Props to Springfield for having the guts to poke a little fun at himself. And for being down with the "tasteful nudity" and "simulated sex" that I'm told the role requires. (That noise you hear is millions of middle-aged General Hospital fans squealing, "We're going to see Dr. Drake's naughty bits!")

Rick Springfield at Red Robinson Show Theatre, Coquitlam, BC

April 10, 2009

Red Robinson Show Theatre

Coquitlam, BC

Picture & Review by Patti Mullen

The Red Robinson Theatre in Coquitlam, BC (yup that’s Canada) was a nice size venue with just over 1,000 theatre style seats. It was named after Red Robinson who is a British Columbia broadcasting legend and has the same owners as the River Rock in Richmond BC where Rick played back in 2006. The lighting was to die for! Small cameras were permitted but larger ones were asked nicely to be checked (Canadians are very nice). Red Robinson came out and did the intro with a gal from 96.9 JACK FM (sorry I didn’t catch her name). Did I mention the lighting?

The intro with Rodger on drums bathed in white lights flashing off and on is really cool to witness. Rick started off with Mr. PC. For you clothes watchers…he was wearing a plaid shirt (an updated version of the Billy Bob type) underneath the black China Wall leather jacket with the white skulls along the right side. Love that jacket. Pants you ask? He wasn’t wearing any! Kidding. He was wearing the sexiest jeans (4 out of 5 women said so-okay 5 out of 5). They were made to look worn by having holes strategically placed and having that slightly dirty look. Very cool! He was sporting some black and white sparkly tennis shoes that only a few men could pull off. It took a song or two but people began to fill up the floor space between the stage and front row. It definitely boosted the energy.

Between songs Rick told us that he was sick, on medication, and that he didn’t like to cancel unless his voice was completely gone. He also said that we may have to help him with the words as the medication was scrambling his brain (I’m paraphrasing). He mentioned the new lullaby cd with songs he wrote for his kids when they were small. He said his kids were in their 20s now. The songs were recorded long ago and put on a few cds that they gave to friends for their children. They never expected them to come out like this. He also said they aren’t really the kind of songs that work for a concert. If they put anyone’s kids to sleep let him know.

Rick broke a guitar string (I don’t remember during what song). He asked “who wants a string?” Two people said yes who were right in front of the stage. Rick said he could split it up for them. He said he had to do this all the time without tools when he was a kid. He worked the string back and forth until it broke. He then gave each person a part.

Just before DTTS he told everyone that if they didn’t want to get sick they should use the microphone he was raising in the air. However, if they did want to get sick they should use this microphone (displaying the one in his other hand). He then said “how often can you say you caught a cold from Rick Springfield”. Of course Rick picked on a security guard standing at the stage for DTTS. Rick said that girls dig guys who sing and the guy sang with no prodding. I saw his eyes go huge when Rick said he was going to sing (it made me giggle). Then he chose one woman in the audience who was named Muriel and later revealed to be 77 yrs old. He said that nobody would be named that today. They would be named Brittany (in a funny voice). He asked who she was with and she pointed her daughter out to Rick. He either asked what with or if she spanked her kids before saying that electrical cords were what was used on him.

Some where in the middle of the show Rick asked if anyone had heard of "The Shadows" several people yelled. And Rick played a little snippet from "The Shadows" and then said he could do that in America because no one there knows who they are.

Rick got mic’d up by George N. (who turns out is a fairly good pick flicker). He came out into the audience for Human Touch and I was fortunate to have gotten some. He stood on my chair! This could be when my brain turned to mush and all those moments I was keeping in my memory banks to write this blog rushed away like a flash flood (instantly). It was so cool of my friend Susan F. to let go of Rick’s back long enough to get a picture of this. A serious sacrifice on her part. Did I mention how hot those jeans were?

Venus in Overdrive rules if you ask me. I love to hear the funkiness of it live. I noticed a bunch of people getting into it that I knew had never heard it before. Although Rick’s voice cut out a few times most concert goers didn’t really notice. People were dancing or bopping in their chairs and genuinely entranced with the whole Rick Springfield concert adventure ride they were on. Okay so was I.

CT Welcomes Rick Springfield With Open Arms

April 4th 2009
Waterbury, CT
Palace Theater

We converged on CT for the last night of the East Coast shows, and Rick & Co. did not disappoint even though Rick confessed to be coming down with a cold. Despite sound issues during the first song, Mr. PC Rick continued on until the issue was fixed and we could hear this awesome song. Rick was still on fire with his jumps, twists and turns.

After a few songs he asked for a tissue and joked about selling them...um YUCK! He talked about the new lullaby CD briefly and treated us again to "Don't Keep the Sandman Waiting". He asked for audience participation on VIO, with the "Yeah Yeah!" part, he ditched Crossroads for a guitar packed Hey Joe which sounded great. A rare treat of Speak to the Sky, with the band joining in was cool.

DTTS was an extended affair, Rick ventured into the crowd and then brought up a very cute Laurel, who didn't want to dance with him. The band even tried to get her to dance by playing Taste of Honey's Boogie, Oogie, Oogie, but to no avail. Laurel wanted nothing to do with Rick's crazy dancing, but she sure did sing! The medley came quickly after that and Love Somebody was, as is becoming the norm, done on the stage. Rick was much more careful with the guitars tonight, gently releasing the black wireless and removing the headset to venture into the crowd for Human Touch. While Rick was in the crowd, the guys decided it would be nice to converge on Derek for some goofing around. If your a fan of the guys in the band, I highly suggest turning around while Rick's in the audience and check out what they are up too. You never know what you might see!

Rick made his way back to the stage and on with the new version of Jessie's Girl, which I have become a fan of. Usually I hate to hear this song as we all know it signals the end is coming but the new version does extend it a little and Rick and the guys all look like they are really enjoying it. After Rick introduced his incredible band, off he went while they played on for a few more minutes before the encore break.

While waiting for stage return, we wondered if we would get another two song encore. Of course we did! A Nice way to end the three show in a row trip!

Rick Springfield Rocks the Big Apple

April 3rd 2009
New York City, NY
The Nokia Theatre Times Square

Night two of the triple header in the North East commenced at another SOLD OUT show at the Nokia Theatre in the heart of Times Square!

With the curtain drawn, the lights went down, the stage was rushed, and the intro music started - the energy of New York City was definitely in the room, and before we knew it there was Rodger performing his great drum solo, with the man himself strutting to the mic to launch into Mr. PC.

Rick was still as jumpy as the night before and I captured my first ever jump shots! I am telling you those sneakers must have Mexican jumping beans in them because Rick was all over the place. We started the evening off with a few from Venus in Overdrive. Mr PC makes the perfect opening song in my opinion. Rick commented that since so many of us had been to the show the night before they would change it up a bit. The surprise of the night was Beautiful You. I love hearing anything fromSDAA but this is a favorite.

He commented about having a new album out, well not that new he said, he wasn't referring to the Lullaby CD but he did treat us to some of "Don't Keep the Sandman Waiting" and commented on having to get up way too early the next day for a morning show. Next they launched into VIO, which totally rocks live! This one is a keeper in the set list. Before you knew it, it was time for DTTS. Rick made his way into the crowd near me and found a few willing participants before heading back to the stage. Whenever Rick is in the crowd, I always try to turn around and take a few pictures of the band. Well, they also seemed to be having fun up there on stage without Rick, joking and clowning around. At one point Matt was standing over Rodger, it almost looked like he was on his shoulders.

The Medley came next and then on to Love Somebody, where the wireless guitar and headset made an appearance. Rick once again stayed on stage for the whole song. When he announced it was time for "Human Touch" he threw, and pretty hard I might add, the wireless guitar to George who did not catch it and it slammed on the stage. I do think it was intentional on Rick's part to do that though, as George had a strange look on his face, like "What are you doing??" Rick had actually been pretty hard on all the guitars during the night. Rick grabbed the mic and headed out to the crowd making it all the way back to the mezzanine section, standing on railings, before making his way back to the stage for the new version of Jessie's Girl. After the intro of the band, they kept playing a little longer and Rick exited the stage.

The band and Rick eventually re-emerged for yet another two song encore (I can get used to this!) Wasted and Kristina ended the night, and while the show was over too soon, there would be one more night tomorrow! On to CT!!!!

Rick Springfield in Morristown NJ

April 2nd 2009
The Community Theater
Morristown, NJ

Review & Picture by Rosie Malthaner

The evening started with the Squirts opening. I love hearing the Squirts live, its really nice to see their personalities come out. We also had a special guest join them. Mark Goodman was in the audience and Matt couldn't resist coaxing him on stage to join them. Mark had fun with the guys, goofing around and grabbing the tambourine.

After their set the audience eagerly awaited the new intro featuring Rodger on drums. The intro music started with the curtain drawn and all of a sudden up it went up and there is Rodger in the spotlight jamming on the drums. Next thing you know, Rick launches into Mr. PC. Perfect song to start the show with. The crowd was on their feet and the show was underway!

The real treat of the evening was the duet of Rick & Matt on Love Me Do. Rick was in rare form, and seemed very happy to be back in the Northeast after only a few days away. There were lots of rose smashes (I'm still finding pieces of dried flowers around the house. lol) and whatever you think of the new sparkly black sneakers, well they definitely have been giving Rick air as he jumps and spins around the stage.

DTTS time and Rick picked a friend standing next to me to start off. Matty apparently hadn't turned the sound on yet, so that caused Rick to give him a piece of his mind. He made his way around the front of the theater for victims, as I call them. Then he returned to the stage and launched into the medley. The wireless guitar and headset soon appeared, and Love Somebody was performed on the stage in its entirety. Rick announced it was time for some "Human Touch" and off came the headset while Rick threw the guitar to George before heading out into the audience. It seems to be his new thing to go out without the guitar and headset, and only for one song. The reason soon became apparent as he made his way back to the stage for Jessie's Girl, the new version! I have to say I am really enjoying the new version of Jessie's Girl. It seems to go on much longer and you all know its kinda sad to hear that song because you know the end is near. Rick introduced the band and off he went leaving us wanting more.

And more we would get! A two song encore. Rick came back to the mic and announced "Wasted"! Very cool indeed. This was followed by a favorite of mine, Kristina. The show was over way too soon.......but there were still two more nights to go here in the Tri-State area!
