Rick and the band never disappoint! Cherokee was a loud, high-energy show, and one I won’t forget anytime soon. The new venue at Harrah’s is very nice, with comfortable seating, new drink holders built into the chairs and a much better set-up for picking up tickets and entering the venue area. The sound system has improved as well (or did the band just turn it up louder than ever?!) I couldn’t hear very well for almost 2 days after the show! We snagged great seats in the 7th row through Rick’s fan club, which were in the center section and luckily near the isle. A perfect spot! The lighting was also incredible at Cherokee this year. I wonder if they changed that? It was a great scenario for taking nice pictures.

The show opened with Rick’s “video montage” that highlights his career from back in the 60’s to the present. Very cool! Then Rick and the guys hit the stage and rocked out to Who Killed Rock and Roll. The first time Rick chatted between songs, he commented he was glad we had 2 big screens on either side so that he could check his hair periodically. Haha! Then he said, ‘I’m so vain,’ and then something like, ‘actually, no. I’m really just one big insecure mess.’

I was happy and surprised to hear Rock of Life on the set list! They also played one of my favorites, Living In Oz, which really jams out live. There were a lot of rose bouquets at this show, which is always nice for many gorgeous rose explosions. This was the first show in awhile that I didn’t take flowers, so I was glad a lot of other fans brought some. Except at one point Rick grabbed for someone’s flowers in the front side section and I heard him exclaim something and he told them they didn’t take the thorns out! So he threw the roses back to them.

Rick found a sign someone had made which had a cute laughing/smiling photo of his “Mum” Eileen while she was in the hospital. (Don’t you know that his mother probably wanted to choke him for posting photos of her in a hospital gown?!! LOL) He had the sign on stage and talked about how his mom had been in the hospital, and that she gave them a scare but she was fine now. He marveled at how she bounces back and keeps on going strong at age 90. The sign said, “Richard, you are a very naughty boy” which he read out loud in his best Aussie-Eileen voice. Funny!

At one point someone handed Rick a pinata that looked like Darth Vader’s head. He busted it open and candy went flying everywhere. He grabbed up handfuls of candy and threw it into the crowd. I didn’t see this part, but my husband told me later that George had picked up the empty “Darth head” and was wearing it on stage for a minute. Also, a fan gave Rick a clever black T-shirt that said “I was killed off Battlestar Galactica.” Cute! He got a kick out of this.

During Rick’s talking on stage he talked a bit about how he spent some time in Viet Nam in the 60’s. He also asked the crowd if they knew how old he is now, to which a lot of people screamed out “62.” He said he is proud to be a vegan, except that he does have to eat some fish now and then or else he gets too skinny, but how he feels sorry for the fish that he eats. He said he was at least trying to send a good message. Rick also suggested a book called “The China Study” which he said helped him to get off a lot of the medicines he was on, but then said he still likes to have a drink now and then because he wouldn’t want to completely “F*** it up.” lol

Rick then “prepared the fans” for participating in the song Venus In Overdrive by shouting out some “yeah yeah’s” and “whoa whoa” sounds, to which the crowd echoed back what he said. Then he made a monkey sound, of course just to see if the crowd would follow suit, and yes…they did! Rick laughed at this. He announced that it was a new song (okay…so it’s not THAT new anymore, haha) and he said do not go to the bathroom right now because he might launch into this---and he strummed the first few notes of Jessie’s Girl. Rick teased and grinned, “I’m not going to, but I might.”

The security at this venue is still pretty strict, as always, but nonetheless fans still venture down toward the stage to snap photos and be up close to the action. I would love to know what the security team must think each time they learn that RS will be hitting their stage again!! LOL I think Rick AND his crowd give them a run for their money! It’s comical to watch security trying to keep up with Rick when he’s crowd surfing. Anyone who has ever attended a Rick show knows how chaotic it becomes when Rick leaves the stage to mingle with his fans. When Rick ventured out for Human Touch he walked across our chairs and then headed toward the back rows, much to the happiness of the fans who were seated there. He really knows how to stir up some action. ;-) Oh yea, Rick also told the security team that they probably didn’t know what had hit them tonight. Then he said that it’s called a rock and roll show!

What a fantastic night! Rick was playful and in great spirits. Of course, I can’t recall ever seeing him live that he wasn’t fun and happy on stage. We love you in Cherokee Rick! Please keep coming back to our NC venue!

Rick Springfield - Partying Like It's 1981

Just over the Texas state line is a gambling Mecca called Thackerville, OK. It is large, more than a little gaudy, and on Saturday, August 6, it was hot as hell and crawling with Rick Springfield fans.
The first thing I will say about this venue is that if you come, bring a good pair of hiking boots. The casino is exactly one mile long from entrance to end with the auditorium being a fairly good hike from the hotel and lobby area.
The other information you should know in advance is, as with most casinos, there are 3 rows reserved for various VIPs roped off at the front of the stage. The first row is not REALLY the first row. It is the 4th row. The good news is that if you don’t have a ticket for that section, you are not getting in. Thus no jeopardy of those from the back haphazardly mowing down those in the front during the mad I-just-have-to-get-two-inches-closer-to-Rick-I-don’t-care-who-I-kill-or-maim-in-the-process stage rush we are all so familiar with. The bad news is, many fans have to watch great seats being occupied by people who are lukewarm (at best) about seeing Rick. It’s a win-win, a lose-lose, or a win-lose situation depending on your personal preference.
I was happy with my 4th row seat and enjoyed the opportunity to watch not only the Rick show, but the fan show in front of the stage as well. It’s kind of like a surreal double-feature minus the popcorn. But if you are a real stickler for being pressed up against the stage, this might not be your venue.
The show began with the film montage and fans cheered as the various moments of Rick’s career danced across two large screens on opposite sides of the stage. I liked both the film and the screens. A cameraman followed the action of the show so every fan had a close up view from beginning to end.
The film ended, the stage darkened (it was so dark, Matt got an escort from a guard with a flashlight to his place) and Rick strolled out.
After sporting shorts, sweat pants, shirts that may have never, in fact, seen an iron, and what I can only describe as his YMCA shower shoes during the weekend’s sound checks, I was pleased to see Rick all dressed up in black stretchy jeans, a black shirt (later to be discovered as sleeveless) and a black jacket with a very cool burgundy lining. Pretty common stage apparel, but way better than the afore mentioned glorified pajamas.
Rick was his powerful and energetic self as he launched into WKRR. I think some of the less than excited VIPs who were sitting down in front got under Rick’s skin a little. I caught him on more than one occasion bending down to flick picks at their heads. I understood his frustration, but really, what a sad waste to a perfectly good pick.
The show continued with AOTH followed by (to my great delight) LIO. Rick did have a lyric malfunction on the first chorus singing, "I’ll throw it all away of that’s what you want me to do" rather than, "it took a lot out of me it took a lot out of you." He also sang, "sometimes the dream can rape you" rather than "wake you" as he often does live. I prefer wake you…but that’s more because I am a purist when it comes to the religious experience that LIO is for me. Potatoes PoTATOes…moving on…
Rick removes his jacket to thunderous applause and great whooping and says, "Hey! It’s 108 degrees outside!!" Unfortunately, he was not exaggerating.
Next, he tells us again that, "I did not write this song, but WE like the guy who did." As he launches into Paul McCartney’s "Jet", I wonder two things. 1) Who is "WE"? Is that the royal we – as in I am Rick Springfield, this is my kingdom, and I dig this song and will forever sing it? Or is there someone else in the band who likes "Jet"? and 2) WHY MUST YOU SING THIS SONG? I personally love Sir Paul. And I know for a fact he’s got way better songs than "Jet." But then I’d just as soon hear the Hokey Pokey. So maybe I’m a little biased.
Rick did two songs from what he called the "new album", Venus in Overdrive: VIO and VS. He had a cute bit when he introduced the new songs. He said that he knows people try to get up and go pee while the new stuff is being played. "But", he said, "you never know. I might go" then he banged out the first licks of JG. He continued to tease the audience with that well-known riff all night until he finally played it as the last song before the encore.
After the first verse of IGE, he did some heavy breathing then said, "Was that good for you? It was for me. I need a cigarette!"
Following IDEFY, Rick threw the brown "Pleasure" Fender guitar into the air. His reach came up a little short, and the falling instrument passed through his fingers and onto the floor. Rick looked at George N. and asked, "Alright?" George apparently felt it was just fine because Rick said something like, "I love Telecasters. You can fuck them up and they’ll still play."
Rick also managed to have some fun at the audience’s expense. He pointed towards the crowd and said, "There are a couple of people sitting down thinking, ‘Who the fuck is this? This isn’t Noah Drake!’ Yes it is!"
He saw a sign, not a very intelligent sign based on his comments, that had some fan’s room number written amid some flashing lights. Rick said, "There’s a lot of psychos here who now know your room number. They’re gonna call you up tonight and say, ‘Saw your room number. Can me and my friend come up? We got some meth. You wanna get wild and loopy?’" I’m not entirely sure what was funnier…what Rick actually said or the creepy hillbilly voice he said it in. Anyway, most people would have gotten the hint, but the girls in question held the sign up again. Rick, chuckled and said, "So she put it right back up AGAIN! I saw the room number. I got it." I’m thinking they are still waiting for him to show up,.
DTTS provided Rick more audience fodder. The first security guard he chose to sing, Don, absolutely refused to sing. Rick later referred to him as a "douche."
A woman at the front of the stage actually took the mic from Rick’s hand. Rick said, "Someone wants to take over the show."
After a brief delay, the woman sang out, "Don’t talk to sexy rock stars." She explained to Rick that her husband made that up.
With sarcasm and fake astonishment, Rick basically said, "Really? You didn’t get professional help writing that?"
Rick also had a good little rant about Matt (who left the stage during DTTS to go to the bathroom.) Upon noticing Matt’s absence and subsequently discovering where he was, Rick threatened to dock his pay saying, "I’m paying him for 90 minutes!" He also tried to get the cameraman to follow him into the restroom. Thankfully, the camera was not cordless, so Matt was saved from Rick’s visual intrusions. However, Rick did scream out, "How’s everything going in there?"
About that time, Matt came back out and took his place on stage. Poor Matt. Must be hard to work for such a tyrant.
And, as usual, Rick picked on himself while discussing the finer aspects of the film Hard to Hold and the television show Californication. He asked the audience if his butt should have won an academy award. Most agreed, by applause, that it certainly should have.
Rick finished up the show by playing a powerful and well-loved JG and introducing the band. He exited the stage for about 4 minutes then returned shirtless for the two-song encore: Human Touch (during which he ventured out into the audience) and Kristina.
The show ended on a high, and the fans seemed quite pleased with his efforts on their behalf. Of course, everyone had to take the death march back to the hotel…but that’s another story for another day.
Overall, not the best show I’ve ever seen, but with the highlights including LIO, his amazing and soulful Red House, and the line, "Let’s party like it’s 1981" before singing LIAT, it was a very worthwhile and memorable experience. I’d do it again tomorrow.

Well if Verona is my very favorite venue, Westbury is my least. I know some people like the whole revolving stage thing, everyone gets to see....but I hate it. You get to see a quarter of a show. One of the great things about seeing Rick is watching him on stage interacting with the band and audience. In Westbury you don't get the full effect. Needless to say I did get myself to that happy place and enjoyed the show. The theatre was not even close to sold out, the downside to a show at the end of a holiday week. A highlight was the Squirts opening up. I haven't seen them in a while and they are never disappointing . Matt also has a new CD out, Disposable Planet, and if you haven't checked it out you should!

There were lots of rose explosions and the DTTS kids were adorable. Guitars continued to be a problem all weekend and when they didn't work as Rick wanted them too he had a tendency to beat them up a bit. Bert Young, of Rocky fame was in attendance and Rick brought him on stage. He was sitting in a regular chair at the end of one of the isles at the stage and after the show had a nice line for autographs. Rick ventured into the crowd during Human Touch and had a hard time, falling a few times before giving up and heading back to the stage for the always a bit sad to hear Jessie's Girl because you know the end is near. Back on stage for a one song encore but it was a shirtless one! A trend that continued all weekend!

This is hands down my favorite venue to see Rick in. He is comfortable there and despite the table seating I am too. lol After all the PR that week for the paperback release of Late, Late at Night I think Rick was ready to hit the stage with his talented band. He was playful and threw in a few teaser songs throughout the night. One of them a Beatles tune where he came and sat on the edge of the stage, stretching out his legs on my table. He swatted my arm and told me to "Stop photographing the band! I'm cuter!" They were making fun of him from the other side of the stage and I couldn't resist. Matt & George then joined him at the edge of the stage for the Beatles song.

Someone in the crowd yelled out Inside Sylvia as he was about to start I'll Miss that Someday and he obliged and the band took a break and left Derek behind to accompany him on a shortened version. He also commented he could see an older man walk out of the venue so he started to play Moon River. You Really Got Me made a return for the first time in a while. And for DTTS he made his way to the crowd were he found a few willing victims, I mean fans to sing for him, one of them a teenage Elena, a friends daughter.

Then he brought two cute girls up on stage. He was off to crowd surf a few songs later and made it all the way to the back of the venue and back in one piece. A 2 song encore was a nice way to end the evening. Oh and did I mention there was a shirtless encore? Unfortunately the battery in my camera died right after DTTS. It was kind of nice to just watch the rest of the show without a camera!

“Wild and Wonderful” as West Virginia license plates say: Rick was that and more, he was in a great mood and full of energy. The venue was situated in the part of the state, which is practically Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia combined. It basically was in the middle of nowhere, as Rick pointed out during DTTS as “where the…..are we?”

I’ve got to say that this show was another one that will go on the top of my list of “best ever”. I was quite apprehensive about going to the show since there were no assigned seats. We had VIP tickets through the fan club, but after calling the venue with questions what VIP meant, I really wasn’t sure. When they said VIP, that is exactly what it was. We were ushered to the preferred seating area, which was roped off where the high rollers usually sit. We were told we could sit anyplace within the area, noting that no one was sitting in the front row of tables, we chose front and center which also included free drinks! Wow, this is what I call an awesome Rick concert and he hadn’t even taken the stage. My apprehension turned into, “I’m loving this place!”

Usually at a Rick show when the intro music begins you have everyone on their feet in anticipation of Rick’s grand entrance on stage. We discussed if we should stand since no one else was in our area, but decided to go for it hoping security would not tell us to sit down. When WKRR began, everyone was finally on their feet to our delight since I can’t do a Rick show sitting down! The first couple songs were his usual set list until he said he didn’t write the next song, but he really liked the guy who did, which turned out to be Jet. He really rocked it.

He talked about the cruise, stating that it was going to Jamaica and also Cuba where they would buy cigars, hope he was joking! He mentioned his guest list and that his Mum might be joining the cruise. Love it when he talks like his Mum saying “Richard, don’t be so rude”.

At one point Rick tossed his guitar up in the air and then tossed it to George N, hitting him in the feet. Poor George takes a lot of abuse from Rick’s guitars. Rick commented on the cool lights on the tables in the VIP section and asked if they were there to scare away the aliens. He asked if those were the expensive seats and said “let’s hear it for the cheap seats”, the crowd cheered.

Gloria (dirty version) was next on the list. Rick did his usual spiel asking women to hold up their right hand. I decided I wasn’t going to do it and he immediately noticed me and told me to raise my hand, which I did and then put it back down. He told me I had to keep it up, so I raised both hands, he got a kick out of my refusal to follow instructions.

When it was time for DTTS, he went to the side of the stage and sat down on one of the speakers. Rick talked about how ugly he was at 15 and how he found out about girls liking guys who sing. He tried to get two of the security guys to sing, but neither one would cooperate. Since they refused, he said he needed a “real man” to sing, I started pointing to my husband. Rick came over to us and got up on the table, and asked my husband what his name was. He told him it was Mike, Rick replied that was his brother’s name. He did the usual encouragement he does when he wants a man to sing. Mike sang DTTS to the crowd’s applause. Rick then turned to me and asked if Mike was my husband, which I replied, “Yes”. Rick then asked me a question that I can’t repeat here and could not answer at that moment in front of a 1,000 people. My reply was a look at Mike and I just shrugged my shoulders! Rick can be a little rude as his Mum says; now I wish I could have answered in Rick’s Mum’s voice about being rude! I later asked Mike what was going through his mind at the moment Rick asked him to sing, he said he was hoping he could remember the words to the song! He said he wasn’t as experienced as me singing DTTS. I thought that was so funny
he was thinking that.

Rick moved down the table to one of my tablemates. He wanted Tracy to sing DTTS, but instead she said it was her birthday, he asked her how old she was and according to her answer, he said he probably dated her Mom. He proceeded into the crowd asking quite a few other men to sing and he proceeded back on stage with a young girl named Molly. Rick and Molly danced on stage, which is always fun to see Rick dance. Molly did a great job on stage singing DTTS.

When Jessie’s Girl time came, security started to allow the crowd from other areas to go to the front of the stage. You could really feel the energy surging. The encore ended with a shirtless Rick signing Wasted and Kristina. You know you’ve been “Rick-tified” when you hate to see the night end and wanting more.

Rick Springfield is a singer-songwriter, Grammy Award-winning musician, actor and best-selling author. With 17 top 40 hits, Springfield is best known for the Grammy-winning, 1981 #1 single "Jessie's Girl", which became a blockbuster of 1980s pop rock music and helped establish the emerging music video age. As an actor, Springfield is known for playing Dr. Noah Drake on the daytime drama General Hospital. He originated the character from 1981–1983 and then returned to play him again from 2005–2008. Springfield also recently wrote and released his autobiography, Late Late at Night, which topped many best seller lists, including the New York Times Best Seller List.

My sister and I were very excited to find out that Rick's

Milwaukee "Freakfest" was not going to be on the same weekend as my son's birthday this year. We made plans to attend as many shows as we could, because this wou

ld be our first time attending "Freakfest." Unfortunately, we were only able to go to the fourth show because of my work schedule. We made plans with new people that we have been chatting with on Facebook to meet at the charity softball game. It was great to put people's names with faces and make new friends.

We were not sure what to expect from the show because it was the last night and all we were told was that it would be another high-electric show. The new opening montage was amazing!! It was great to see

clips of Rick from older interviews and videos, and it was cute to see pictures of him with his family.

The show started with Rick telling the audience about Stacy Creamer's (his publisher) attempts at playing softball. Rick had the entire audience in hysterics because he said that she is an amazing triathelete but she couldn't throw a softball and when she finally got a hit, she fell on her way to first base. The team from Patawotami also came up on stage to receive their softball trophy from Rick, which he said had a guy drinking beer on it and he didn't know what that had to do with softball.

The band started rockin' to great songs like Souls and Who Killed Rock n' Roll. Then, Rick told the band to take a break and he sat on a stool and sang some songs acoustically, which I haven't heard him do in a long time. It was great when Rick told the guys to come back and Rick had some Human Touch and finished the show with Kristina, one of my favorites.

The fourth night in Milwaukee was awesome!! Rick and the band rocked, we met new people and we have something to look forward to for next year.

After the National Anthem, the game got under way with Rick up to bat first. He tried to get Josh to bat for him, afraid to risk injury to his newly repaired shoulder but the opposing team was not having it. Rick hit the ball and actually made it all the way home without getting out during the first inning. He also made a great catch in the field later in the game but of course it was the moment I had put my camera down.

The game was to benefit the The Wisconsin Humane Society, for which $3500 was raised. Its a shame that it started to pour because quite a few people had left before the auction of a signed mitt and various other signed items. Next year they should auction off a place on Rick's team to raise more money!

Even though Team Rick got off to a great start, by the time the game was called for rain Team Potawatomi had taken the lead and would get to claim bragging rights for the next year. The trophy would be presented to them at the show that night.

This was hands down my favorite night, just above request night.
The VIO album means a lot to me for many reasons and to finally hear ALL of it live was amazing. It was an emotional night as Sahara's Mom was there to share it with us.
The show started off with some old favorites and quickly got down to business. Some of these are great in the live regular set but some of these others should definitely added. 3 Warning Shots is one of my favorites. Oblivious was a little hard at the end for Rick but he got through it. This show was also being streamed live on Access RS. I'd love to see it again and it was mentioned on his website it would be on Access again soon.
Rick chatted on and off during the show about how some of the songs that were written with Matt came to be. I'm not sure I have the words to describe how awesome Saint Sahara sounded. The emotions were running high all night and this was the cumulation. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house and afterward Rick & the guys left the stage but there was no waiting for the encore music just some soft lighting. After a short break Rick & the band came back for what would be the encore of 3 songs.

ventured out into the audience for DTTS he came back to a silly string assault by

Tonight was a combination show – half electric and half acoustic. I was so excited to finally experience an acoustic set, a lot of my wishes were granted with this show.

What a great way to begin the night when Rick appeared in one of his cool black leather jackets to belt out Who Killed Rock ‘N Roll, I Get Excited and Affair of the Heart. The jacket came off for Love Me Do with Rick on

the harmonica and Matt on background vocals. At the end of the song, Rick tossed the harmonica into the crowd and said “it’s yours". What a nice souvenir for a lucky fan.

The band disappeared backstage and Rick made himself comfortable on a stool to begin the acoustic portion of the show. It was unusual to see Rick stationary and not moving all over the stage.

There was a “Wheel of Songs” on stage which had the top 19 requested songs that fans voted for on rickspringfield.com. Rick invited fans individually on stage to spin the wheel, each giving him a kiss on the cheek or a hug. Several fans got smart by not spinning the wheel and just moving the wheel to the song they

wanted to hear which Rick got a kick out of. This part of the show was a treat for many since it included songs that he rarely sings live. Lust lead the list, followed by Karma, and Big Beautiful Friday Night (Hey, Maria). I almost melted when State of the Heart came up on the wheel, I’ve waited seven years for this since I’ve only heard portions of the song in the medley. Perfect and Written

in Rock were next by the luck of the wheel. When Rick introduced Honeymoon in Beirut, he mentioned that it was a song about his wife, Barbara. To everyone’s cheers, Pretty Little Mess came up on the wheel. He said this was one of the top requests. Rick really needs to add this to his set list because everyone loved hearing the song.

After the request portion, Rick said he was getting bored and wanted the band back on stage. I really enjoyed the acoustic version, but when the band started rocking with Itsalwaysomething, there was no question that rockin’ is what Rick does best. The energy returned to the stage. The electric set list continued with IDEFY, Love Somebody, and Jessie’s Girl. The encore included a shirtless Rick singing I’ll Make You Happy and Kristina, which is always

a crowd pleaser, except when it's the last song, it also brings an

end to an awesome show.

Tonight was billed as a High Energy Electric Set. It was a pretty normal set list with a teaser of Zoot's version of Eleanor Rigby thrown in as Rick talked about the 2011 cruise, where Zoot will reunite after 40 years. The band was in great form and Matt couldn't resist spraying Rick occasionally throughout the night the the silly string provided to him

by Buzz, and Rick was sure to retaliate. He made is way out into the audience for both DTTS and Human Touch having a bit of a time navigating the new layout of the theatre. The night ended on a high note with a shirtless encore and the promise of 3 more nights!

Last night’s show was an encore performance for Rick sponsored by the Central Ohio Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation. By far, this was the best concert experience I have ever had! Front row dead center seats for the first time. Everyone should have this experience at least once.

The show started with Who Killed Rock & Roll, a high-energy song to match Rick, who was a bundle of energy. He asked how we liked his new red shoes, which were a Converse type shoe, never saw a man wear red shoes, but of course, Rick could get away with that. He said Rodger didn’t like his shoes.
He briefly spoke about his book, to which I held up the book, I was determined to get it autographed, which later in the show, he was kind enough to oblige.

Rick asked if there were any kids in the audience. The answer was “yes” to which he said that he was surprised that they allowed kids in a bar. He said he really liked the place.

Just before leading into the bathtub version of Gloria, he said that he overfilled the bathtub in the hotel he was staying at and got the floor wet. He asked if anyone was downstairs in Max & Erma’s and wondered if they got wet, someone in the audience said that they were there. He must have gotten out of the tub and forgot to turn off the faucet when he went to answer the door when Gloria knocked! If you have heard this version of the song, you’ll understand.

Don’t Talk to Strangers is always a favorite part of the show for most people. Rick headed right off the stage straight to me. I sang the best I could, which can be a little scary when he is standing directly in front of you with a microphone in hand. When back on stage he asked for some kids to come up. There were three girls and two boys. The smallest boy appeared to have stage fright, but he did an awesome job singing when it was his turn.

While he was singing I Get Excited, someone behind me had a bra in her hand that she wanted thrown on stage. Since my seat was directly in front of Rick, she handed it to me, which I tossed at Rick. He picked it up and asked if it fit. I made sure to point at the girl it belonged to and give her the “credit”.

For the encore Rick sang I’ll Make You Happy. There’s no question about it, he DID make me happy last night! The show ended with a beautiful array of rose petals littering the floor from all the rose explosions. It was another show that did not disappoint.

Rick rocked the Strawberry Festival, as I knew he would! It was a show I’ll never forget! I had my best friend beside me, the friend who I discovered Rick Springfield with while we were young girls…back in the “heyday” of MTV, Rick’s time on General Hospital and also our days of teen magazines. So naturally, this was a much-anticipated night for us! I have seen Rick live many times now, but this was her first experience, and one she explained to me was like no other concert she has attended…Ever. She said it felt so “personal,” like he was performing just for her. She said she now understands why his fans are constantly returning to his shows. Yes, I think she nailed it. Smiling, (okay, BEAMING!), I agreed that Rick always gives you the feeling that if you were the only person to show up at the venue, he would still rock it out just as hard and passionately as he would for an arena full of fans. One more person now understands the magic of an RS show. There is something wonderful and almost gratifying about watching the excitement on the face of someone seeing him perform for the first time. It’s a feeling of ‘See! I told you Rick’s an amazing performer!’ She totally “got” his humor and laughed along with me throughout the show, commenting that Rick is “SO funny!” It also wasn’t long before she shouted in my ear that Rick looks INCREDIBLE for a 61 year-old man and that he “drips with sex appeal” on stage. LOL!! So she noticed… ;-)

The show opened up with Who Killed Rock & Roll, which is a good rocking song to kick off with. As always when Rick takes the stage, it feels like magic to me, like time has stood still for the next 90 minutes. I can never contain my excitement or energy when Rick is in the house. My friend and I immediately jumped to our feet and began dancing and rocking out, only to look around and discover that almost NO ONE was standing up!! Only little groups of the crowd in each section or a few people here and there were on their feet, while everyone else remained seated for almost the entire show. What??! As a whole, this was one of the strangest (deadbeat? lol) crowds I have seen. OK…seriously odd to me that people could sit still while Rick is up there pumping out that natural energy of his. So maybe it wasn’t too horrible most were sitting, because when they performed I’ve Done Everything For You, Rick veered over to our side of the stage and pointed towards us. This thrilled my “Rick Virgin” friend who shouted at me, “He was pointing at US!“ I can’t be sure, but I think she was right. I glanced around to see if others were standing up yet, but possibly our entire section (at least as far back as I could see…we were in the 7^th row) was seated except for one other person, and she was directly behind us.

Rick looked amazing and happy that night, dressed in a long-sleeved black shirt (long sleeves? In Florida?!), black pants, and a long black scarf-type thing. I wonder how soon before he ditches the scarf completely? It kept drifting over the guitar and getting in his way while he was playing. He later took it off. Also, I think he had on his “blingy” shoes, but I can’t recall for sure. I was grateful he was able to lose the arm sling recently and play guitar for our show, especially since I had a “newbie” with me. Apparently the after-effects from surgery haven’t affected his killer guitar-playing. He appeared to never miss a beat.

They played the usual hits, but much to my joy and surprise, Itsalwayssomething was on the set list that night. Following were a few songs from Venus in Overdrive, one being the title track (which is my favorite “new” song! Love the heavy bass in that one!), along with What’s Victoria’s Secret and I’ll Miss That Someday. The crowd continued to remain somewhat “still” at this point. My friend and I would stand up for a bit, then sit down for a minute or two, for fear we were blocking someone. Awkward! The sitting would become more than I could stand, and we would jump to our feet again! I asked the woman behind us if we were “blocking her,” and her reply was something like, ‘No! Not at all! What’s wrong with these people? I can’t sit down for a Rick show.’

Rick was in great spirits, chatting playfully with people across the front row during his Don‘t Talk To Strangers bit. I think his first “victim“ was one of the security guys…and wow, what a TON of security they had lined up, guarding the stairs with their life! And by the way, that was the highest stage set-up I personally have ever seen him perform on. For the sake of visibility, it was probably just as well we weren’t seated in the 1st or 2nd row. Rick kept on teasing people, especially the Queen of the Strawberry Festival and her runner-ups. He questioned why she had a “sash” across her chest and she explained the meaning behind it. I couldn’t hear all of what she said, but judging by her red cheeks on the big screen, he was embarrassing her. As most of us know, that only adds more fuel to the fire and he won’t let up! He did the usual “you suck” when someone sang into the mic at his request, which cracked my friend up. I’ve seen most of these jokes and stints before, but it’s a lot of fun with someone who’s never heard it before.

There were a few rose explosions that night, one of which I think was during Affair of the Heart, but unfortunately our rose bouquet was not one of them. At the point when we were down front with other fans, I really should have attempted to toss them on the stage. But again…security on every corner and a tall stage didn’t make for a great situation. If you even appeared to be inching too close, they would swerve in front of you and block you like a big statue. I’m not sure why, as the stage floor was way OVER our heads. Not like I was going to sprout springs on my feet and jump the stage from that level! LOL

For the opening of I Get Excited, Rick asked the crowd, “So…when you first heard this song when you were 12-years old, who was really surprised to find out what this song was actually about?” The crowd cheered. After the first line that says, “well you admit you like the game but you’re not gonna play,” he stops and says, “I think you thought I meant jacks back then.” Next line: “you just ignore what you’re body is trying to say,” and Rick stops to say, “no, I didn’t mean your body was trying to tell you that you needed to go to the bathroom.” (HA!) And again after the next lyric that says, “baby please I can’t please if I’m on my knees,” he jokes, “actually that’s not entirely true. I CAN please when I’m on my knees. Just depends where YOU are.”

At one point Rick drew attention to the fact that Rodger had shaved off his eyebrows!! Silly boy! When the cameras zoomed in on him, I then realized why I had been wondering earlier in the show who the heck was on the drums that “sort of” resembled Rodger, but not quite. LOL! In fact, Rick began to tease him about it, asking the crowd if that was weird-looking! Yes, it was odd! Next came the first few chords and lines from the Beatles Strawberry Fields, in which my friend and most of the crowd seemed excited to hear…but then we were quickly bummed he didn’t finish the song. It was just a quick “teaser” before picking on the Strawberry Queen once again and then launching into Gloria, which did end up making up for the Beatles tease, even though I’ve seen the Gloria cover countless times now. It was clever and appropriate they threw in that song teaser, considering Plant City is a town who’s livelihood has always been based on strawberry farms and citrus groves. Plant City is also my mom’s hometown by the way! For my friend and I to return to this festival together after 28 years and especially the Rick event that night, it created a special nostalgic day for me all around.

I thought it was comical how Rick began the “racier version” of Gloria, stating that Gloria said, “ah…F-f-f” in which he cut it off mid-word, quickly thinking to ask if there were any children here tonight. Yet he didn’t think of that earlier in the show with the comments during IGE. Lol. And yes, several kids were there, many near the front. He made the usual jokes throughout the Gloria skit including “soaking” with his rubber ducky, but left off the “naked and soaking,” bit. But he continued with the “raise your right hand girls,” and once again teasing the festival queen by saying, “Come on Miss Pageant. Right hand up. Come on girls. Help her out. She looks like she needs her right hand raised.” lol He also points to and tells a young girl she needs to block her ears for this one and then goes into, ‘she puts it right between my legs. And she pulls the plug!’

When Rick did Love Somebody, I was surprised he didn’t say the usual, “who saw my naked butt in that movie?” Instead he asked if he should’ve won an Oscar for that movie and then proceeded to ask if his ass should’ve won an Oscar. Funny! It was interesting to watch the crowd around this time in the show. When Rick did Don’t Talk To Strangers, people began milling around a tiny bit and some moving down near the stage, but most were still sitting down. Then when he began the crowd walk (and sadly, no human touch for my friend that night, as he veered off to our right instead…), people starting moving and shifting and standing up, probably so they could see where he went or try to get close. The security began to look nervous and more edgy I noticed. Then there was a scary moment when Rick stepped on the first few chairs and was literally swaying and tipping, arms out to either side to keep his balance. He looked for a moment like he was surfing!! Of course he was saying, “don’t let me fall!” but honestly…for a few seconds, I thought he was going down, laughing and smiling as he went! I wonder if the crowd nearby didn’t know what to do until he requested they help him out. He managed to stay up and continued climbing over and onto very wobbly folding chairs. It didn’t seem like he stayed in the crowd as long as usual. Most of the crowd who had been shifting around during Human Touch returned to their seats when it ended.

I can’t recall exactly when it happened, if it was when he started Jessie’s Girl or if it was at the start of the encore, but suddenly it looked like 200 people had gotten together and plotted to rush the stage! It was WEIRD to see people rushing to the front that way in one big moving group…at the END of the show no less…rather than the start. One minute, almost no one. The next minute…people were cramming into every available space near the stage area. And the funniest thing was that all the security seemed to disappear in that instant. I have no idea where they all went for a short time (as they did return a bit later). Was it break time? Haha My friend and I also made our way down front for the encore, in hopes that Rick would see her roses and do another “explosion.” We were right beside a large speaker when Rick left the stage and the encore music cranked up into the heartbeat/breathing sounds. The hopes of the crowd that he would return to the stage were apparent at this point by the frenzied shouts and screams coming from behind us. I was hoping he would lose that long-sleeved black shirt for the encore, (or change on stage?!) especially since he was sweating so much in it. You know, we wouldn’t want Rick to burn up during the show or anything. ;-)

I was beside myself when he ran back out and kicked into I’ll Make You Happy!! What an energetic guitar-driven song that is! Songs from SDAA are always welcome in my book. The only “change” I noticed when he returned was he had his glasses on. Since the show, I have been second-guessing myself and thinking he might have played Jesus Saves, but I can’t remember for sure. If anyone has any input or corrections on the set list, please speak up! In my excitement that evening, it’s possible I’ve forgotten a few songs.

The show ended with a great performance of Kristina, with most of the crowd singing along. As always, a Rick concert never seems long enough, although they played about 18 songs. The time leading up to the event seemed like an eternity! Overall, it was a fantastic show with great memories. And most of all, it was a thrill to share a Rick show with my lifelong best friend. She says she WILL be returning to another Rick show in the near future, and of course I too will be looking for the next event.

Wow, it was a long wait for this concert, originally scheduled for May of 2010. Nine months later and it was worth the wait!

This was the first concert since Rick’s shoulder surgery that he was able to play the guitar. There were times he said his fingers hurt and you could tell that he was being cautious in his moves.

The lighting was so cool at this venue; different patterns and colors were projected on the screen behind the band. It made for an enjoyable light show.

On the drive to the concert I was listening to Who Killed Rock “N Roll, and was thinking I hadn’t heard him sing it for a while. Guess what he started the show with…WKRR.

At one point, security decided that they didn’t want fans standing too close to the stage. Rick was disappointed when they were shooed back to their seats and commented that it was a downer that people were getting into the show and had to move back. He was cute when he mimicked fans walking back to their seats with sad faces. He warned the “white shirts” to not do it again.

During Don’t Talk to Strangers he stood at the edge of the stage and asked a few fans to sing. He didn’t venture into the crowd as he usually does.

To the crowd’s delight, for Human Touch he did come out, instructing us ahead of time to be careful of his shoulder. He covered a lot of territory during the song.

For the encore, he sang Jesus Saves, which was a treat. Rick seemed to enjoy the evening and we’re all glad he is back in his element!

About Rick Springfield and His Devoted Fans is COMING SOON!

If you were at any Rick events in 2010, you most likely saw a camera crew tagging along capturing life in the Rick World TODAY! In fact, Yellow Rick Road Productions, an independent film company, captured hundreds of hours of Rick and fan footage and are now in the process of editing their film, AN AFFAIR OF THE HEART: THE JOURNEY OF RICK SPRINGFIELD AND HIS DEVOTED FANS. The plans are to debut the film on a big screen at an international film festival as well as on a cable TV network sometime in the second half of 2011. By 2012, they should have their DVD ready for release, which will include a lot of fun outtakes and extras.

As any fan can attest to Rick Springfield sparks something within us and he has for decades! This “something” is wonderful, magical and inspirational. Being in Rick’s presence is like being transported to another dimension. His die-hard fans can’t seem to get enough of him!

It’s time the world gets to see what Rick’s loyal fans have known for years: Rick Springfield is an amazing talent as well as a great human being, who has made and continues to make a positive impact on so many of our lives. In addition, with Rick as the common denominator, many friendships have blossomed and dreams have come true.

Here lies the premise of the new all-access feature documentary, a film that will shed light on just what it means to be a Rick Springfield fan.

“Our goal as filmmakers is to show the world the Rick we know and love,” said Melanie Lentz-Janney, who is producing the film along with Emmy Award winning filmmaker Sylvia Caminer. Melanie has been a Rick fan since 1981. “After receiving close to 500 fan story submissions and doing an open casting call, we narrowed our search down to a few main characters who by sharing their experience on camera and allowing us into their worlds help tell the story of life as a Rick Springfield fan.”

She said determining the featured fans was a difficult undertaking considering there were so many wonderful, rich stories to be told. One huge factor in casting these fans was how involved they planned to be in the Rick World in 2010. Plans to attend a few concerts, a book signing or two, and the cruise became a critical part of the casting process. The fans selected needed to be open books … allowing the camera crew to experience their lives when they are not at a Rick show.

A 9-minute teaser is currently available at www.rickspringfielddoc.com.

Filming of this documentary began in Milwaukee the beginning of last May and continued through the end of 2010. The Yellow Rick Road team traveled with Rick to Milwaukee, Dallas, New York City, Europe (Sweden, Norway, Germany), Chicago, upstate New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Walt Disney World Resort, and on his Caribbean cruise.

“We filmed fans of all ages, both sexes, professionals, parents, grandparents, friends of Rick’s, people who have worked with him, and, of course, Rick himself,” said Lentz-Janney. “Everyone had a great story to share and we are so grateful to the fan community for rallying behind this project.”

When all is said and done, the project will be owned exclusively by Rick Springfield.

The show started a little after 10:00 pm.

Rick was kind of talkative during the show. Here are some of the things he said throughout:

Rick says that Matt wants him to tell a story. He starts out "so there's this priest
and this Rabbi" He starts over, "hey, its official, I have a screw loose. I had a
motorcycle accident in 1988, and they put a plate in my shoulder because the bone was all shattered. I just had it x-rayed the other day, and there's a screw loose. One of the screws has actually come loose. And it is floating around inside my shoulder. So if I had that removed, and put it on Ebay, who would bid on it?" Crowd screams. "Alright, you are a bunch of sick puppies. I may just do that. And then you can say you got screwed by Rick Springfield". Then going into the next song - "This is one off of our latest record. Its a song"... then he starts over saying "who does this sound like.....This is off our latest record, It's a song, it's a single, its beautiful....It sounds like John Lennon, that's how John Lennon used to introduce their songs. Here's a song off one of our records, I think it was a single, I don't know [from the man who just wrote his memoir]It's called What's Victoria's Secret.

"How freaky is this place? This is what it is going to be like in the future, a bio dome. Only this will be a bio dome for the rich people. Everybody else is going to be in a tent corrugated thing that gets hotter than hell in the summer, unless we do something....

Next up, "When I wrote this song, I bet most of you didn't know you could possibly die from lead
poisoning from eating fish. You can now, how cool is that?! I've been eating fish all of my life, and my heart is in great shape. I have like no plaque or anything in my heart, really clean, but I have lead and mercury poison. I'm getting rid of it now, don't worry. Its on its way out. You gotta cleanse yourself. Other than that I'm completely clean. And lead and mercury poison is not a sexually contagious disease. So this song, before fish was poisonous is called...and he goes into IGE.
During the break in IGE, he does some heavy breathing and says "That's what I sound like when I'm.....doing push ups". Then he sees a woman who has a "Kiss Me I'm 40" sign, in the audience. He says "why should I kiss you just because you're 40? You gotta reach higher than that. Then he asks "Who here is 40?" A lot of people yell. He says "I don't mean 41, or 43, or 39. who is exactly 40? Then he notices the band isn't really paying much attention so he says "I'm sorry, am I bothering you guys?" Then he asks George how old he is, and George says "old enough to know better". Then he goes back to his other conversation. "Ok, so there's this amazing anomalie that we start to define at 40. 40th birthdays are cropping up all over the place. Then he sees a girl holding up some underwear. And he says "I hope they don't fit you sister because that would be scary (they were kind of big). She had written some stuff on them. They look like underwear my Mom would wear.
Hey you can read about my Mom's......he stops and says, "Don't hit me with those things,so she throws them over to the side and he tells George to put them on, so he does. Then he goes back to his story....You can read all about my Mom's underwear in my new book "Late, Late, at Night". It's coming out October the 12th (yea, he got the date right). Then he notices George has the underwear on over his pants and says "You will do anything for a laugh". He messes around with George for a second, then goes back to "so if you want to find out about my Mom's underwear, buy my new book when it comes out. And George says, "I'm freaking excited now!" And yes, this whole conversation was in between the verses of IGE. So Rick picks back up on the song (and actually sings the right verse this time).

Later, someone else holds up some more underwear (although this time Men's). And he says "I'm not touching any underwear", so they toss it up, and it has Californication on it, and he says "they were a lot smaller than that one" He then starts to go into VIO and goes into the "yea, yea" bit, and makes all kinds of different noises and gets the audience to repeat it. He actually did a pretty good cow noise.

During DTTS,he changes the line to "Every man's a Cowboy". He goes over to the DJ that was playing music before the show. And he asks him "What was all that 80's shit you were playing
earlier. He gets him to sing, then tells the security guard that the DJ got him out of singing. He says about the security guard "he's cute, isn't he". It's alright for a guy to think another guy's cute, and he asks him how old he is (22). Rick says "Dude, I have sons older than you. You're right in between my two sons, I have a 21 year old and a 24 year old, and they're awesome. It's a great age, and now we are going to teach you that girls like it when guys sing. It's not hard to figure out. I figured it out pretty early. I was in the crowd, watching all these girls around me flipping out over this dope on stage.And he wasn't even singing his own songs, he was singing 60's stuff. Then he gets interrupted, when someone hands him their cell phone and he tries to get them to sing, but didn't work out. Then he gets the security guy to sing. Then he knocks over his glass of wine and says "Oh shit, there goes my wine". Then he says "oh, are there any kids in the audience, I certainly hope not (I guess since he cussed), but this is Texas, right? I know from fact that you let young kids into bars because I've seen them. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, I'm just wondering why there's none here tonight." People yell out it's 21 and older. ""You have to be 21? Why? Seven year olds buy drinks to, you know. (kidding).

Does he normal routine about Hard to Hold and Californication. Then he says "There's even a photo of my naked butt in my book, Late Late at Night, plug, plug...."
At the beginning of HT, he says "You better have a beer waiting for me at the back there on the bar", so he was planning on making it to the back, but he didn't. He made it to about the
middle, but they were hanging on him so much at that point he gave up and went back to the stage. There was even someone who followed him from the front of the stage. I guess some
people think he can't get enough of them.

Before JG, he says "you know, there are a couple of songs you can recognize from the first few notes. And he plays some song (sounded kind of like Shave and a Haircut), then Smoke on the Water, then Jessie's Girl. He says "personally I prefer and did the first one again. But we'll do this one instead, and went into JG.

A few additional notes....As we were on our way to the venue through Times Square we stopped to check out the Naked CowGirl and who do we we see making his way though the crowded streets of NYC??? None other than our favorite rock star and his entourage...And yes that is his publisher, Stacy teasing us with a copy of Late, Late at night.

Rick did stop the show at one point to acknowledge the security force that was causing a ruckus in the front row area. The Nokia, sorry I just can't call it Best Buy yet, what a stupid name, has always been one of those venues that stage rushing is a given and that cameras have never been a problem. Well security didn't get that message and threatened the crowd on our side that they would shut down the show at one point if everyone didn't go back to their seats. They also told us on the way in that we needed to check our SLR cameras, um, no! It can stay in my bag if that is the case. However, Rick told the crowd and security that pictures are fine with him and that security needed to leave everyone alone because it was a big distraction to him! I believe he told them to "relax your crack" Good for you Rick! After that, security seemed to disappear on my side of the stage. He talked about how he forgets that the fans that follow him from show to show have real jobs and its funny when he runs into them while they are working as he did on a flight one day as our friend Jackie is a flight attendant, he actually first called her a stewardess to which she corrected him.

He also made his way out into the crowd for DTTS after noticing a friend that had a better hat on that Matt! After our friend Bill obliged him and sang he made his way back to the stage but not before being groped so bad that he stopped and looked for the culprit. He found 11 yr old Sara on his way back and brought her up on stage for a little song & dance.

Jack White was also in attendance but didn't join the band. And much to our surprise & delight Jesus Saves made it's way into the encore before ending with Kristina.
